As a result of whatever mysterious circumstances caused The Shattering, the material plane was completely enveloped in a protective energy barrier that came to be known as The Veil. This ever shifting, purplish barrier protects the inhabitants of the Material Plane from the hordes of savage demons in The Abyss surrounding it. There are no stars in the Abyss, however, if you were to look up at the sky on a clear night you would see hundreds of tiny pinpoints of orange light against the purple hue of The Veil. This is a result of the dauntless onslaught of demons attempting to penetrate The Veil and infiltrate the material plane. Every so often there will be an extremely coordinated assault by the demons and something will slip through. As such, demon hunter is an extremely popular occupation.

It is not currently known how The Veil was created or how it is maintained. However, ever so often a mysterious stone will fall from the Veil and impact somewhere on the Material Plane . Artificers have learned to forge these veil stones into various demon slaying weapons and small-scale anti-demon barriers with similar properties to The Veil.
